Fishing in silt |
Lead | |
|
Guys can anyone give me any pointers for fishing in silt? I'm tempted to fish a lake next weekend which is pretty silty throughout. Im not sure how deep
it is, which i suppose will be the first thing i need to work out, and i'm pretty certain ill need to use a helicopter rig but what about baiting? Maggots
are just gonna bury em shelves in a matter of seconds so would deads be the better option? And would you still ball/spod in ground bait?
Any help greatly accepted! Dan.... |

Danny,I think deads, cous cous and rice will all sit nicely on top of silt as should groats, spodded in for best results and yes I would have thought a heli
rig would work well.

Sounds good...how about hemp?
I'm thinking helicopter and chod rigs. Am gonna go on a recky tomorrow night to ascertain how deep the silt is then i can gauge my rigs. Anything popped up has to be the way to go then spod or ball in dry/semi dry ground bait balls. I've never tried cous cous or rice....have to pay a visit to the supermarket thanks Tom |

Sounds like a job for casters Danny, a lightish cage feeder may be a good bet as well as this will sink a little slower than a lead or heavy block-end. Coconut
(dessicated) is a good feed additive, it is VERY light and will settle on top of the softest silt.

the cage feeder or is it best mixing with breadcrumb, small pellets etc?

Just got back from recky and can report that as far as i can gather there is hardly any silt!! Not sure why the gentleman informed me that there was last time
i was down....but using white cotton and marker rod confirmed otherwise! The bottom if anything appears to be a little soft with canadian weed starting to
sprout in various locations and algae is starting to form on the surface. It's pretty featureless with no areas of heavy weed present anyway or depth
changes. There are reeds and lily pads around but little else......although a couple of the swims are open giving great visability.
I'm tempted to fish as normal using maggots and not deads on one rod....question i have is if it becomes apparent that the feeders are sitting in soft mud/silt whats the best way to kill em? I'm thinking...with limited means.....that the best option is to pour boiling water on them for a few seconds.....is this a wise move? Dan. |

Danny, cover em in cold water (just enough) first and then slowly add the boiling water, this stops them stretching.
