I don't know how much I pay for a gallon of bait - except that its the same as everyone else. Of course its possible to catch fish spending less, but with tench, using plenty of maggots does tend to pay off and when I go fishing i do like to catch. At the end of the day its only money, if you don't spend it what's it good for? Loads of blokes spend more than 20 on booze and fags every day, others spend their money on fast cars, and posh houses. Each to their own. Luckily I don't have to drive two or three hundred miles every time I go fishing as that would brake the bank. Cheers, C. |

Hi
Darran, i just noticed that - 200 lobs As Chris said, alot of people will spend that sort of money on smokes, beer etc but i'd prefer to spend a little extra on bait to have a good day out. I rarely use this amount of maggs though, normally 3 pints and i find that will often do me for a 24hr session. With respect.... |

Joe, Darran
If you freeze whatever maggots, casters and hemp you don't use after each session, it will always come in handy to bulk out your feed next time. Obviously there isn't only one way to fish for tench. Mass baiting can be incredibly effective, by building up lots of fish in the swim. Despite having caught doubles using this approach, I'm not sure that it's necessarily the best to pick up the bigger fish? Tony Miles told me that on the Res he used to fish, while he had more action on big beds of bait, he took his biggest fish on smaller beds. He thought that regular casting into the baited area coupled with constantly hooking and playing smaller fish may have been scaring the big girls away. Thinking back, most of the 9 lb plus fish I have caught over big beds have come early in the session. Using two or three rods with smaller beds of feed placed along different features is an option that can be very effective. This season I intend to experiment more along this theme to see what happens. It won't save on the bait bill though. I was trying to think what makes me happiest 40 in my pocket or a 10 lb tench in my lading net? There's no competition!!! |

20 a gallon in my local as well
At least you could collect 200 lobs if you had the time for nowt, maggots are extortionate. Its gonna be an expensive spring on what I suspect will be a real ball-buster of a pit "I have nothing against golf as I suspect it keeps legions of the unworthy from discovering fishing."

Hi
I think you are right Chris in saying that the bait is hardly wasted because you can freeze it for your next session. I always do this for my hemp, and i will definately be freezing any left over maggots form now on. With respect.... |

Hi guys,
it's not the gallon of maggots that hurts the wallet, it's the gallon of casters!OUCH You can allways use a couple of pints of rice in with the hemp.Looks like maggots on the bottom. Chris. |

Hi Chris (TM)
How much do you normally pay per pint of casters then..? Believe it or not, i've never used casters in my fishing so far which sounds odd as from reading articles and posts by you chaps, it seems that they are a pretty devastating bait. With respect.... |

Re: Maggots.... | ||

Hey Joe,
they are 3 a pint,sometimes more.I'd never use a gallon really, unless they were free!But,I wouldn't be happy fishing without a couple of pints at least.IMO they can outfish maggots all day.I'm sure they get picked out preferentially among the feed, even alongside maggots.They can be difficult to present as they smash on impact with a big feeder.So I like to use the rubber ones.They take them just as well. I usually fish them in an open end feeder plugged with dry groundbait.But some people use small PVA bags of them with the hookbait right in the pile.I might try that,I can just imagine the whole lot going up in one go!Cheers,Chris. Respect back at you |

My local tackle shop does pints (of maggots) at 2 but will do a gallon for 12, being a match shop they arn't the best reds I have seen, but fine for feed and If I want anything better I Just buy a pint from the more specialist shop @ 260! not sure what they charge for casters but will often let the left overs change before freezing, but most often will just freeze the lot as soon as I get home!

Hi All,
don't know if its something that can be tried elsewhere but i have struck a deal withmy local tackle shoip that I will buy any "old" maggotts he has left each week if he just bungs themin a bag and freezes them for me - he gets shot of them /has room for fresh batch and I give him 1 a bag which is about 1.5 pint !! Got a gallon in already for a fiver !!! Frank
Don't live to work,,,,,,,, fish! |

Re: maggot prices | ||

oh that sounds a bit more cost effective though, only trouble is dont they turn their maggots into casters?
didnt need a gallon of maggots today, but still managed a plump chub of 6lb 5oz! |

Hi Tenchmagic Chris
The PVA bag (mesh is best) method with casters is superb. I use it with a 3 or 4 inch sinking braid hook-link and as you say when the tench sucks it, it all goes in. Cheers, Chris. |

I like that idea. Unfortunately my local shop turns them to casters. I'll ask around though, as I'd dearly love to save some money. Also its true that if you buy in bulk some shops will do them far cheaper and you can freeze them. Mind you if your buying several gallons I would think its worth visiting a maggot breeder. What about forming maggot co-ops with your mates - say three or four blokes chipping in and buying five or ten gallons each. Now I bet that would save some dosh. You would need some good riddles, etc. as they come in trays complete with sawdust and bones. |

I shouldn't post this on this thread but I want to avoid attracting possible flack on the BFW site. Regarding your question on DT baits, they are top rate stuff. I've not used the Oily Chicken for barbel but had lots of carp on in many years ago when I still fished for those things. I do use another bait from the DT stable though and have had plenty of big barbel on it. The more you put in the better it gets however, if you don't fish the stretch often, its worth thinking about using a DT mix that has an equivalent flavour in DT trout pellets. That way you can get the best of both worlds by using some pellets as attractors whilst establishing the boilies, then dropping the pellets later on. Does this make sense? |

Re: Maggots.... | ||

Hi
That is a good idea there Frank, but i think that my local turns them to casters, though a mate of mine works there so i may be able to strike a little deal with him Chris, thanks for the info. One of the reasons i decided upon this bait was because that a mate was doing well with it on a stretch of river that is low stock and found that he was able to attract fish from a long distance away - also the fact that you mentioned it in your sayers article made me go for it as they use high quality ingredients. I was thinking of using a pukka fish base with the oily chicken flavouring, what do you think? I will also pick up a few kgs of the pellets in the same flavour. Sorry to go off thread there. With respect.... |

Blimey, supposed to be cooking but I need to post my two-penneth here =
With you on the old maggots Frank....... I'm meaner then that!!!! - SKINS! The rubbish they riddle off when turning casters - deads and skins is Brill! I get them free from tackle shops with a bit of chat in the right direction (the way the proprietor wants to go!) They go in with the groundbait. I learned this off Bill Rushmer when he was a great angler and a Great Man in the 80s. He's lost the plot a bit since then. YES you have Bill! With your shop-bought maggots ordinaire, they are simple souls. Starve them of oxygen and they go into a stasis. They look dead but aren't, bit like Man U supporters. When you get them home, flavour them if you wish, then pour them into sandwich/freezing bags from the supermarket. About half a pint at a time. Squeeze all the air out and knot the bag down tight. They will remain OKish for a month like that! They need to be aired for a couple of hours when you want to fish with them, and for a while behave rather stupidity, say like Leeds supporters, before they get the wind back in their sails. I personally think that the Leed Fan stage is ideal cos the wriggle but are too thick to stick their heads in the mud. Maggots are usually photophobic but at THIS stage are just daft. The advantage here is the lack of smell - maggots/maple/strawberry/tutti, or if you are looking for a divorce, Monster Crab! IF they go rough, freeze em! I take my little blokes to the lake in a freezer bag so only use whatever is necessary. Important - date the bags - don't wanna meet the UNDEAD on a sweet summer morning! OK - Linguine alla vongole.... |
