Posts: 1132 (28/02/06 16:43:15) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Tags : None In an effort to spread some of the content of Spring Fishing thread..............I'm intersted in others thoughts on plastic baits for tench. My experience with these in tenching is just one short Summer. I have used plastic imitations fishing for pike and perch and in sea-fishing, but THIS is essentially different. I now want the tench to accept a plastic bait fished static and to mistake it for the real thing. I started by using 2 plastic maggots on a hair-rig alongside 2 real live maggots, and I think I would have stuck to that if they hadn't sussed my little rig and caused me to ring the changes. The baits I have used have been unflavoured, but there are flavoured ones out there and I know some of you have played around with flavouring the ordinary plastic maggots. Is that worthwhile? My dog did steal and eat the contents of a pack of Enterprise imitation corn impregnated with good old Tutti frutti. He ignored the others! I'm not sure that a bait that appeals to a Border Terrier is any kind of recommendation! Drew

Posts: 775 (28/02/06 19:38:19) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Hi Drew, last year I caught on two fakes on the hair and three reals on the hook from mid May through till mid June, this was when the rudd REALLY moved in, I think they are attracted to the tench / carp spawn, anyway from mid June I ended up fishing just the fakes on a hair feeding hemp, real maggots and casters over the top one day session this bought me three 8lbers one 7lber and a 21lb nuisance common (much to the disgust of the bivvey boys that had blanked all week!) I didnt bother with flavours as I figured that with fish competing for food (spesh the rudd) the 3" hook link wouldn't give them a chance to reject it!

It's not just that they look good and are bouyant, but their ability to withstand the attacks of small fish is an added bonus. Terry Lampard wrote an article largely about artificials in Coarse Angling Today last spring - I think he specifically mentioned using them to deter rudd! In the lakes I fish small fish are unusual. The smallest fish I caught last year was a 4lb male tench! In the past I have rather welcomed the arrival of razor-blade bream, as it always ushers in the arrival of the ladies in green jackets and a screaming take! There are a few bigish bream in Johnsons - One of my fave stories: in 1999 I was fishing the Stables Swim which Chris made famous back in the 80s. Late lunchtime I had a steady bite and struck hard. I saw a flash of a light brown colour out in the lake and pumped in a plastic-bag-like bream. It was 10.14. The bailiff confirmed; a lake record. The record isn't of any interest to me, but a potential wind-up is! I texted my friends Pete Garvan and Simon Lush: "BROKEN JOHNSONS ROAD LAKE RECORD - 10:14" and waited....... I didn't wait long........ "I'm sure bigger have been out then that.." "But they're bigger from the Railway" "Didn't Paul Snep do an 11?" etc etc etc I let it rumble on all summer whilst I giggled! Competative Bxxxxxds! Maybe I'll do a 10:14 tench from there one day? One day never! Cheers Tom Drew

Posts: 775 (28/02/06 22:43:57) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Nice one Drew, After some soul searching over the winter I came to the conclusion that although I would love to catch a Double fig Tinca, I just love fishing for Tench, the bigger the better, but how many times have I been fooled by an angry 4lb male that I thought was that big old girl! Gotta love em all!

Make that a brace of 10.14's when it happens, but make em tench. When my first double turned up, it was like winning the lottery - like it can happen to others, but not you. Actually it aint like that at all - when your turn comes, it happens - just like that! It's a bit like fishing the only half decent swim left vacant on Johnson's on opening day back in the 80's and catching my first nine 2 1/2 hours into the new season - when your turn comes, it comes and even Slushy couldn't make it weigh 8.15. Fake maggots/casters do not need accompanying with real one's (except in the feed). A mate of mine has even caught on fake sweetcorn cast out in the middle of nowhere with no feed to accompany it. I do use occasionally use flavoured ones (as I have an old pot of Scopex which I keep a variety of rubber baits and my Enterprise inflatable girlfriend in but I can't honestly say that this has ever given me any edge, except I prefer the smell of Scopex to fish) - (sorry about that). Just been chewing the cud with him. He's thinking about a lake in the Heathrow flight-path that Steve Goderski and I have been considering: we must have the same contacts! I'm with Tom, I just love tenching. I've only used the Enterprise sweetcorn as a glorified hair-stop to hold the mussels on the hair! Must give it a go........ The reason I ask is that in one of many mice attacks in the garage I noticed a few pieces of rubber corn with bites removed... Also dogs like rubber toys etc... Andy

I remember a bit about this in someones article (may have been Terry Lampards - not sure) where it is said that some anglers think that fish actually like the taste of rubber. Not entirely sure, but i have found (with fake corn) that there is no difference in my catches whether the corn is flavoured, or left in its normal rubbery state. With respect....

Also their fake corn with a little green fur "ruff" which not just makes it look like its poking out of weed but also makes sit proudly on top of real weed !! Clever chaps ......... what a life !!! I saw them in an article by Ian Welch and they looked good. I think that the bloobworms could do the trick, but presentation would be a slight problem i would have thought..? On the subject of bloodworm, anyone actually used any of the bloodworm baits for tench? Some of it looks good (live worms, dead ones, preserved ones etc) although i think that it is a bit of a gimmick. With respect....

Posts: 1 (28/02/09 08:43:23) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	hi guys i am new to this sight i used to fish for carp but i now fish fish for barbel as i find the search for barbel is more of a challenge but as far as using artificial bait when i i fished syndicate lake i was using corn that glows in the dark come night time where ever i put that piece of corn i was catching tench also that was with no other bait just a single glow in the dark corn or try a yellow piece of corn with a small stocking bag full of small trout pellet which work really well in the past by the the when i used to fish for large carp all of my big fish ie thirtys all have come out on rubber bait mainly yellow corn

Posts: 1 (14/05/09 12:44:18) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Hello all, this thread about artificial baits has set me thinking. at the moment i am planning to work my way through the baits mentioned in Walton's 'Compleat Angler' but am also interested in any other different/odd baits. after reading the thread i have just got a few of those red rubber bands that the postman uses and tried shaping them with scissors and knotting them etc. just chucked a few in the sink and a must say they look convincing. i havent seen the enterprise bloodworms up close, but they look a bit stiff to me. the rubber bands in the sink moved around very naturally and i dont see why they wouldnt work. perhaps they may be better in flowing water. i'll give them a go. cheers rich.c
